6 WEEKS / MONDAYS / JUN. 16 - JULY. 21 / 5:30PM-7:30PM / AGES 12+ / $240
During this 6 week course, students 12+ will learn the rich history and fundamental skills of watercolor painting. Each week, students will explore a different element of water color painting through the eyes of a legendary painter. Every class incorporates the MONART drawing method—a guided method for drawing developed by artist Mona Brooks—as well as other painting techniques through a guided tutorial by Ms. Kayla. Students are encouraged to either emulate the style of the weekly master painter, or recreate the painter’s work in their own style. Students will learn many different strategies for building color, texture, and depth using watercolor, how to care for painting materials, and how to develop a personal painting practice at home. The skills taught in each class build off of each other consecutively, so committing to all 6 weeks is mandatory. No prior painting experience or knowledge is required. All materials are provided including aprons, but students are encouraged to wear clothes they are comfortable getting paint on.

Ms. Kayla is a professional painter and teaching artist from New York City. She currently teaches for MONART School of the Arts and The Old Globe Theatre, and has experience teaching a wide range of age groups and artistic mediums. Her painting style is vibrant, textured, and abstract. She primarily uses oil paint and an impasto palette knife technique– although she enjoys working with watercolor, acrylic, and other mediums as well. She is most inspired by impressionist artists like Vincent Van Gogh and Mona Edulesco, but she also draws inspiration from nature, music, storytelling and philosophy. She studied Political Science, Sociology and Painting at American University in Washington D.C. and she is passionate about Arts advocacy and Arts education. She loves helping her students develop confidence and curiosity in their own style and unique process. She believes there is room for everyone in the arts and encourages her students to take risks and make art for themselves. Her goal is to guide her students on their own individual creative journeys, and provide a calm, inclusive, non-competitive environment for her students to grow.
